SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Congressman Eric Swalwell spoke Monday morning about reports that the FBI may release files about an old investigation into Swalwell's connection with a suspected Chinese spy.
The investigation found no evidence of wrongdoing by Swalwell, who has been a vocal critic of President Trump and is the leading candidate for California governor.
"This case is closed. The FBI said all we did was help. This effort to weaponize the FBI against the president's political enemy at a time that we are at war shows a distraction; it shows an obsession of the going after political opponents," said Swalwell.

The investigation centered on Christine Fang, a Chinese woman who helped with fundraising for Swalwell during his congressional campaign.
The move to release files of a closed investigation that did not result in criminal charges is unusual.
FBI director Kash Patel wants to reopen the case and send agents to China to interview Fang.
