"We have our robbery homicide division handling the investigation. They worked throughout the night on this case and were able to take into custody Nick Reiner," McDonnell said at an unrelated press conference involving the FBI on Monday.

According to law enforcement sources, Nick Reiner was not at home when his parents were found dead. Investigators believe he left at some point after the stabbings. Firefighters responded at 3:38 p.m. Sunday to a medical aid call at a home in the 250 block of Chadbourne Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department. The deceased were initially identified only as a man and woman ages 78 and 68 years old, the fire department said.

Sources say the couple's daughter was the one who found them. A search warrant for the Reiner's home was quickly sought.

"They make sure that you get the search warrant ahead of time because they don't want to have any problems later in the case if there's some allegation that they illegally got the evidence at the get-go of an investigation," L.A. County District Attorney Nathan Hochman said.

Nick Reiner was taken into custody several hours after the bodies were found and booked on the murder charges around 5 a.m. Monday.
