SF Safeway popular with singles might be getting a makeover

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A proposal is on the table that would bring more affordable housing and a brand new Safeway grocery store to San Francisco's Marina neighborhood.

Align Real Estate has filed plans to develop a unique 25-story apartment complex at the site where a well-known and iconic Safeway currently stands.

The Marina Safeway has been known as a place for singles to meeting since the '70s.

The developer says it would include a new Safeway, along with nearly 800 homes along Marina Boulevard next to Fort Mason.

Eighty-six of the units would be designated as affordable housing.

San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie is formally opposing the project. He released the following statement:
"The Family Zoning Plan will help the next generation of San Franciscans afford to raise their kids here, and we're going to do that while protecting what makes our neighborhoods so special. A developer trying to sneak in a project before our plan takes effect is a complete violation of the spirit of that work. Our administration will stand up firmly to developers that game the system, and we will pull every lever we can to make this a project that works for this neighborhood and our city."

Just last month, it was announced that the same developer was planning a similar developments at a Bernal Heights Safeway.
