SF mayor signs ordinance restricting RV parking

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco has taken the latest step into banning RVs after Mayor Daniel Lurie signed a new ordinance Tuesday morning

The legislation would limit RV parking to just two hours and force people to look for temporary or longer-term housing.

Lurie said it will bring dignity and stability to families living in vehicles, but not everyone is on board.

The new law creates a two hour parking limit for large vehicles, like RVs, throughout San Francisco. The time limit will be in effect 24-7.

The people living in those RVs would be offered housing or the option for a vehicle buyback program.

City leaders say the goal is to help people move indoors and reclaim public spaces for families and businesses.

Critics say that it's cruel to force people to give up their only home when there are not enough housing units for all of the people who need help.

There's also concern that communities outside of San Francisco may now see an influx of displaced RV residents.

Still, Lurie said in his remarks Tuesday morning that this is a new day for the city.

The ABC7 Originals documentary "Home Lost" explores the road to permanent housing for people living on the streets of San Francisco.

"I think what this means for San Francisco is we're going to have cleaner, safer streets. We're going to have more people living inside and and if you want to stay in your RV, you can do so outside of San Francisco," Lurie said. "There's going to be options for people."

The legislation takes effect in 30 days from Tuesday, but the city says it's still giving some time for outreach.

In this first month, the city says outreach teams are going to let those living in RVs know about their options.

The second month is when housing offers and the buyback program will roll out.

In the third month, after all outreach has been made, parking enforcement will begin.
