SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose celebrates after becoming the first city in California to approve ADU condominium conversion.
Last year, a law took effect that allows ADUs to be sold as condominiums, separate from the main house.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan says it's the most accessible option for home ownership.
"The unit behind us is more than a home. It's history in the making. San Jose is creating housing affordability and ownership by thinking differently," said Mahan.
San Jose has streamlined local permitting to make it easier to build ADUs.
Mayor Mahan says the city currently has 86 additional condominium conversion projects in the pipeline.
