San Mateo father, 2 kids hit in crosswalk crash, sparking safety plea

SAN MATEO, Calif. (KGO) -- A San Mateo family is making a plea for pedestrian safety improvements after a father and two kids were hit by a pickup truck while walking on a crosswalk last weekend.

Ashley Madrigal says her siblings, 8 and 16 years old, are now out of the hospital. Her stepfather Ramon Sandoval is still in the ICU.

"The city needs to make changes. It's not the first time, and it's not the second time, and probably won't be the end unless something happens. Unfortunately, it happened to my siblings and my dad," said Madrigal. "He just wants to be okay for the kids. He's in a lot of pain. He just wants rest and to be home with us.

The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. The trio was crossing a crosswalk at North Delaware and State streets near San Mateo High School, just a few blocks from where they live. The driver stayed on the scene.

The spot has long been the focus of local advocates who say it's unsafe.

"We've been asking the city for years to fix this intersection, and it's fallen on deaf ears, and now we have another person tragically injured," said Mike Swire, an ambassador with Families For Safe Streets. He's also on the San Mateo Transportation Authority Community Advisory Committee.

"We can also easily make these corners sharper to slow cars that are turning, we could also have a beacon that will flash when people cross, and speed humps would be helpful too," said Swire.

Community members are planning to show up at the San Mateo City Council meeting on Monday in hopes of speaking with local leaders about making change.

We reached out to the deputy mayor who also represents this neighborhood, but she was not available for an interview.

A GoFundme page was created to help the family during their recovery.
