Suspect arrested for stealing Frenchie; dog still missing, police say

An Oakland man suspected in the brazen theft last week of a French bulldog in San Francisco was arrested Wednesday but the dog is still missing, police said Thursday.

Hank the bulldog was stolen in front of his owner about 11:44 p.m. on Dec. 10, in the 400 block of Castro Street, according to San Francisco police.

The owner told authorities that the dog, a tan French bulldog valued at more than $950, was on the sidewalk when a suspect picked it up and fled.

Dante Shaw, 44, was identified as a suspect and police obtained a search warrant for his car. On Wednesday, they found Shaw in his car, at San Carlos Avenue and High Street in East Oakland, where they detained him.

Evidence related to the dog theft was allegedly found in Shaw's vehicle, police said, but the dog wasn't located. Shaw was arrested and booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of grand theft.

A person on Facebook who said the dog belonged to him described the dog as a fawn-colored 5-year-old French bulldog with a black mask and a stocky build.

Anyone who finds Hank or has information about the theft was asked to contact SFPD at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.
