MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas -- It's a moment more than 100 years in the making.
For generations, a Texas firefighter's family tree has been filled exclusively with sons.
But that century-long streak is coming to an end after the family learned that a daughter is on the way. The last time the Sherman family said they had a girl born into their family was 108 years ago.
On Sunday, surrounded by family and friends, Michael Sherman and his wife, Joacquia Sherman, found out they were expecting a baby girl.
"I just feel honored," Sherman said. "We are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world. Finally, after over 100 years. It's amazing."
The last girl to bear the Sherman name was Orah Belle Sherman, Michael's great-great aunt, born in 1917.
"She was a trailblazer in Atlanta," Sherman said. "She dealt with the civil rights during the civil rights time. She met a lot of civil rights leaders, and she made an impact in Atlanta."
The family said they are now excited to see what the newest Sherman will do with her life when she comes into this world.
"I love her. No matter what path she chooses, we will be with her," Michael's grandmother, Lydia Robertson, said. "She's going to always have support here."
The family told the ABC station in Houston that the baby is due in March. They're also planning to check and see if they broke a Guinness World Record.
