BURBANK, Calif. -- "Shifting Gears" is driving into its second season. But you might say star Tim Allen shifted into "reverse" for the first episode. He got some special visitors from his TV past.
Nancy Travis, who played Tim Allen's wife on his last sitcom, "Last Man Standing," showed up in the season premiere of "Shifting Gears."
He's still dealing with the loss of his wife, so she introduces him to some folks, and they're all from his first sitcom, "Home Improvement."
"It's going to be a counseling session that I join. And it's people that have lost something in their lives, because I lost my wife, and so it's going to be very spectacular and very clever and very fun," said Allen.
As for what else is coming up in season two, Jenna Elfman seems happy.
"I think there's some surprise moments between Tim and I," Elfman said with a wink.
Kat Dennings returns as Tim's daughter.
"There's a lot going on that I can't say because they sent me a thing saying don't talk about this thing but it's pretty exciting," said Dennings. "There's some stuff. There's some stuff. It's like 'Game of Thrones' but a sitcom. That's how it's treated over here."
Daryl Mitchell is just happy to be back for a new season of laughter.
"We're thoroughbreds, man. We've been doing this. And everybody here is not jaded, and everybody is, I don't know, it's just a newfound energy on the stage," said Mitchell.
"Shifting Gears" airs on ABC Wednesday nights and also streams on Hulu.
