UC Berkeley student nearly drowns at frat house: officials

BERKELEY, Calif. -- A University of California at Berkeley student was hospitalized Friday after nearly drowning at a fraternity, according to campus officials.

ABC7 News has learned the 19-year-old student is currently listed in critical condition.

The student's name wasn't released nor were the circumstances that led to their injuries.

"Our thoughts are with the student, their family, loved ones and friends during this time," according to a statement UC Berkeley officials released Monday. "We are following our protocols to offer support to the student and their family."

The Alpha Delta Phi's two-story frat house is located off campus in a neighborhood, a block off of Piedmont Avenue. No one answered the door of the fraternity and someone who identified themselves as a representative simply said in a phone call that they are "cooperating with police and with University officials who are investigating."

ABC7 News reporter Leslie Brinkley contributed to this report.
