Cal student dies after suspected drowning during massive party at off-campus fraternity: police

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- A 19-year-old UC Berkeley student has died days after he was found unresponsive at the pool of an off-campus fraternity.

Police are also revealing new details, saying a massive party was underway when Berkeley Fire responded Friday night.

Authorities estimate more than 300 people were at the Alpha Delta Phi house off of Prospect Street at the time of the drowning.

The fraternity is now facing citations for overcrowding and noise and police say the fraternity's events permit has been revoked.

A separate case is being forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for review of potential charges against the fraternity safety coordinator.

"Our thoughts are with the student, their family, loved ones and friends during this time," according to a statement UC Berkeley officials released Monday. "We are following our protocols to offer support to the student and their family."

The Alpha Delta Phi's two-story frat house is located off campus in a neighborhood, a block off of Piedmont Avenue. No one answered the door of the fraternity and someone who identified themselves as a representative simply said in a phone call that they are "cooperating with police and with University officials who are investigating."
