Victims killed in mass shooting at downtown Oakland bar EZ's Lounge identified as Latetia Bobo and Markise Tyler Martin
OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- On Monday, a candle was visible outside a lounge in Oakland where two people lost their lives and five others were also shot early Saturday morning.
Oakland City Councilmember Carroll Fife told ABC7 Eyewitness News the shooting happened at an after-hours event. Fife says EZ's Lounge on 14th and Broadway did not have permits for the event that went into the early hours of Saturday morning. She says the city wants to see accountability for all unlicensed entertainment businesses.
"All the leaders across the board in the City of Oakland have got to come together and figure out a way to get this violence under control!"
That plea for help coming from Oakland filmmaker Pharoah Powell, whose friend was shot and killed during the shooting.
Oakland police released the identities of the two people shot and killed at EZ's Lounge on 14th Street-33-year-old Latetia Bobo and 25-year-old Markise Martin.

Powell worked with Teesh on two film projects
"I was in complete shock and disbelief Because she was the type of person that you would think, why would anyone want to hurt her?" asked Powell.
Five others were also struck by gunfire but survived. Oakland police said officers detained multiple individuals at the scene and recovered several firearms. A motive has not been released.
A GoFundMe was set up by Martin's brother, Lawrence Mcgee, to pay for funeral expenses.
"Martin was a loving son, a devoted father to his one-year-old daughter," Mcgee wrote on GoFundMe.
Martin's mother, Tanya Scarbrough, said over that phone that they killed her when they killed her son.

Meanwhile, classes were canceled Monday at Caliber Beta Academy in San Pablo, where Bobo was an 8th grade English Language Arts teacher.
She's being remembered as an incredible educator and human being.
"I think it was at least, like, 2 months before school ended, and I was kind of struggling with school a little bit and you know she said something that really helped me get through the year," said Mitchell.
Elijah Mitchell says he graduated 8th grade last year and it was all because of Ms. Bobo's motivational words.
"Her presence brought light to our campus, and she will be deeply missed by all of us," said a statement from Caliber Public Schools. "We know that Ms. Bobo touched many lives, and we will continue to honor her legacy through the love, compassion, and dedication she showed every day."

Kalin Joshua Freeman, Bobo's friend, told ABC7 Eyewitness News Reporter JR Stone that the news was hard to believe.
"That's horrible," Freeman said. "It's just unbelievable because she's so kind. She's a great teacher. She's a great singer. She's an artist and it's not computing in my mind, like, why would somebody, why was she just in that situation to lose her life and everything?"
In reference to the shooting, Oakland Councilmember Fife said:
"Multiple departments in the City began a host of community safety protocols in public space that have been activated to address the thousands of people who gather in the Uptown/Downtown arts and entertainment district every weekend. These shifts in prevention and enforcement must be better communicated to businesses, residents and visitors so they know what to expect and how to plan. We're currently reviewing outcomes to identify ongoing best practices. The tragic shooting that claimed the lives of two innocent victims at EZ's Lounge occurred at an after-hours, unpermitted, semi-private event unknown to the City. We will work diligently to ensure that there is accountability for all unlicensed entertainment operations in Oakland. The proliferation of guns is at epidemic levels. We MUST find ways to address all the firearms on our streets."
