Smash-and-grab suspects use stolen truck in attempt to steal ATM

SAN PABLO, Calif (KGO) -- San Pablo police in the East Bay are looking for a group of brazen robbers who used a stolen truck to ram through the doors of a popular mini-mart. Police say the target was an ATM and other items.

It happened early Sunday morning on El Portal Drive and the crime was caught on a security camera.

Witnesses say they took cover early Sunday, when they heard a crash and saw people running outside the San Pablo Gas convenience store.

The 88-year-old store owner suffered a stroke and was also cut by broken glass after the assault, according to sources. No arrests have been made.

A group of masked suspects can be seen ramming a Toyota Truck through the front doors of the store multiple times.

"Five guys with hoodies, with a scream mask, from the movie Scream and two pistols, I thought the truck was getting chased, they were all standing there, kept saying, do it again, do it again. They did it five times until it got stuck," said Robert Nickelberry.

This minimart never closes. But clerks say that didn't stop the crooks from ramming through these glass doors.

"So they reversed into the ATM machine, trying to bust it open, they were trying to break it, had some pry bars, but the cops came fast," said an employee, who wants to remain anonymous.

Police say the suspects also tried to open the Lotto machine with no luck.

"They could hear sirens, so the guys left the car and fled on foot," said the employee.

San Pablo police say the truck used in the crime was stolen from San Francisco.

It's the latest in a string of smash and grab crimes across the Bay Area, where trucks and cars have been used as weapons. Earlier this month, a group of robbers used a car to crash into a San Jose jewelry store, breaking display cases and moments later they shoved the 88-year-old owner to the ground.

Police say they are looking for suspects in the San Pablo crime and now asking the public for tips. No cash was taken, but employees say replacing the large front doors won't be cheap.

"This is maybe $25,000 to $30,000 fixing, It's crazy," said the employee.
