Woman killed in garage fire near Redwood City, officials say

REDWOOD CITY, Calif. -- A woman died after a fire at a detached garage near Redwood City early Friday morning, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office.

The fire was reported in North Fair Oaks at about 4:45 a.m. in the 600 block of Hurlingame Avenue. Crews arrived to find flames burning the detached garage and threatening the main residence and nearby structures, sheriff's officials said.

The 31-year-old woman was removed from the garage and life-saving measures were attempted, but she was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people were able to escape from the fire unharmed, and other nearby homes were evacuated as a precaution, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, and deputies said the 600 block of Hurlingame Avenue will be closed to traffic throughout the day Friday.
