The technology was originally designed for Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

HOUSTON, Texas -- A subway system at George Bush Intercontinental Airport built by Disney engineers celebrated 45 years of service on Monday, Houston Airports announced earlier in August.
Since opening on Aug. 17, 1981, IAH's Subway has moved millions of passengers a year through its airport system, according to airport officials.
But how did a Disney-built subway system end up in Houston?
The story begins in the late 1960s, when Walt Disney and his theme park design firm, WED Enterprises, were building rides and attractions for Disneyland. At the time, the firm was looking into concepts for transportation systems that could theoretically have real-world applications.
One of these ideas became the PeopleMover, a continuously moving train ride that opened in the Tomorrowland section of the park in 1967. The attraction was then redesigned and replicated for Walt Disney World, opening in 1975 as the WEDway PeopleMover. This new version was powered by environmentally correct linear induction motors.
In 1976, the PeopleMover was certified by the Urban Mass Transportation Administration for urban transit use, according to Houston Airports, opening the gates for WED Enterprises to design transportation systems in the real world.
Enter IAH, which at the time was seeing a period of growth as its terminals expanded, Houston Airports described, adding that a higher passenger volume contributed to delays between terminals.
According to the airport, a Disney executive who traveled through Houston frequently was frustrated by the delays, so he pitched that Disney could build a new transportation system for the airport.
After multiple proposals and a competitive bid process, WED Enterprises was selected in 1979 to build the new transportation system, according to Houston Airports, built with the same lightweight vehicles and linear induction motors as the WEDway PeopleMover. This made IAH the only airport in the world to install a Disney-designed PeopleMover outside of Disney property.
The Subway later opened in August 1981, airport officials said, in a ceremony that included Houston leaders alongside Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck.

Forty-five years later, the two-mile-long transportation system has continued to be a reliable transportation system between IAH's multiple terminals, Houston Airports described, with a reported 99.76% reliability rate in 2025.
Houston Airport officials said that while the airport system continues to modernize its terminals, the foundation remains the same, describing the Subway as "a system imagined in Tomorrowland. Built on a promise. Proven over 45 years, thanks to a little bit of Disney magic."
