The Bay Area Air District has issued a Spare the Air Alert for Thursday, Feb. 5, banning wood burning in the region because of a forecast for high levels of pollution.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has extended an air quality advisory for the region through Thursday because of smoke from wildfires elsewhere in Northern California.
Hot weather and unhealthy air are playing a part in Labor Day weekend plans across the Bay Area.
"This is the prevailing wind flow in the lower parts of the atmosphere. So you can see it's actually going to get worse," said ABC7 News Meteorologist Mike Nicco. Here's when things might start to clear up.
Video shows the Lake Tahoe area submerged in a thick, apocalyptic layer of smoke as wildfire conditions close Highway 50 and force local resorts and beaches to shut down.
"The most dangerous low-level smoke is going to remain well up to our north and in the Sierra," said ABC7 News Meteorologist Mike Nicco.
