Improving access to healthy food for older adults across CA

Everyday, chef Hugo sees to the perfection of more than 1,000 delicious and nutritious meals for seniors.

For a growing number of older Californians barely making ends meet, every serving is a lifeline.

"We've seen an uptick in the number of adults living in poverty, about 15 percent statewide, and for older adults with low incomes, meals are essential, they're vital," said Susan DeMarois, director of the California Department of Aging.

Last year, the California Department of Aging along with community partners such as Jewish Family Service LA, provided 22 million meals to older state residents - some through lunch programs at senior centers and the rest through meals delivered right to a client's door.

From mushroom soup to Swedish meatballs or steak fajitas, every recipe follows a registered dietician's guidelines to meet the needs of people over 60. Nutritionist Siri Perlman explains how dietary needs change as people age.

"We have a variety of different proteins, different colors of fruits and vegetables provide different vitamins and minerals, fiber that they need for their sugar control," said Siri Perlman, director of senior nutrition at Jewish Family Service L.A.

But nutrition isn't just about food. It's also about social connection. Eating meals together fosters community, mental well-being and healthier aging.

Mariana Jimenez lives alone. She comes for the food, but stays for the fun.

"It's very friendly and you eat healthy food everyday," Jimenez said. "They have lot of activities, you know, but my favorite is Fridays, they have Shabbat. We (dance) with the music - this is my favorite."

Some centers even offer transportation to and from meal sites. To learn more about meal programs and services for older adults in your community, just go to aging.ca.gov to connect with your local area agency on aging.
