San Francisco 49ers Coach Kyle Shanahan recovering after serious crash, team says
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (KGO) -- San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan is recovering at home after suffering significant injuries in a car crash earlier this month, according to team officials.
Speaking Saturday, 49ers General Manager John Lynch said Shanahan is making progress but continues to deal with lingering effects from a concussion sustained in the July 14 collision.
"Kyle is doing good. He's got some bumps and bruises," Lynch said.
According to Palo Alto police, the crash occurred around 6:15 p.m. at the intersection of Alma Street and Hamilton Avenue when Shanahan's vehicle collided with an SUV.
ESPN reports Shanahan suffered a severe concussion, a broken nose, a broken hand, three fractured ribs and facial injuries that required more than 40 stitches. He was transported to a hospital following the crash and is expected to miss at least the beginning of training camp while he recovers.

Lynch confirmed Shanahan remains in concussion recovery.
"He did suffer a concussion in the accident and has some lingering effects from that concussion," Lynch said.
Palo Alto police told ABC7 News that the driver of the SUV was not injured. Investigators determined drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash. Police said both drivers cooperated with investigators and no citations were issued.
Although there is no formal concussion protocol for NFL coaches, Lynch said Shanahan will follow a recovery process similar to that used for players.
"Kyle is basically going to be in the protocol," Lynch said. "With all the great doctors we have, we'll let them know how he comes back, when he comes back."
Lynch said Shanahan has already spent some time at the team facility as part of a gradual return.
"He's been in the building, so we've seen him. Like we do with other players, phased-back approach," Lynch said.
Assistant Coach Chris Foerster is taking on some of Shanahan's responsibilities until the head coach is cleared to resume full duties.
Lynch also offered a lighter update on Shanahan's visible injuries.
"You may see him at practice. He broke his nose. The black eyes are getting better," he said.
News of the crash surprised many fans, including lifelong 49ers supporter Christina Guillot.
"Startling news for sure," Guillot said. "Glad he's OK. Hopefully he'll do well in recovery and get back out there with the team. Wish him well."
The 49ers have not announced a timetable for Shanahan's return, saying his recovery will be guided by doctors and his progress through concussion treatment.
