MONTGOMERY, Texas -- Being around horses is often a peaceful experience. For some Veterans, it also offers a chance to heal.
That's the goal at Sunny Creek Ranch in Montgomery and its program, Horses for Heroes. It's a place where Veterans can spend time with horses in a calm, friendly setting, giving them a break from daily stress.
"Once I came here, it was a blessing," Army Veteran Jalexis Osorio said. "It was something I didn't know I needed."
Horses for Heroes provides equine therapy. It was founded by Shannon Novak in 2017. She told ABC13's Localish that the program is veteran-operated, confidential, and free for Veterans.
"I realized that our Veterans deserve some out-of-the-box options for their mental health care," Novak said.
Veterans who found healing through Horses for Heroes share their personal experience in the video above, and why the most powerful connections don't require words.
If you're interested in attending future sessions, you can find more information at the Sunny Creek Ranch website.
