4,500 Google employees sign petition demanding layoff protections

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (KGO) -- More than 100 Google employees rallied outside the tech giant's headquarters in Mountain View Thursday, demanding job security protections.

Union leaders from across the country delivered a petition signed by 4,500 workers to CEO Sundar Pichai and three other top Google executives.

The action is in response to a growing number of layoffs by tech companies.

They are asking for layoff protections including guaranteed severance, an end to performance quotas and the option of taking severance as extended paid leave.

"We are demanding that Google workers have the conditions and the security to do their best work, where they can actually bring new ideas and innovations to life instead of working in an environment driven by fear, where you might be pit against your colleagues or every day you're not sure how much longer you will have this job," said Parul Koul, a Google employee and union president.
