5 charged in Bay Area internet child predator sting, SF Sheriff's Office says

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Five suspects are facing felony charges following a Bay Area sting operation targeting alleged internet child predators, according to the San Francisco Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office led the investigation, with assistance from nine other law enforcement agencies. During the operation, deputies posed as children on social media platforms and online chat services to identify adults allegedly attempting to exploit minors.

Investigators said the suspects range in age from 18 to 50. Two of those charged are from San Francisco, while the others are from San Mateo, Redwood City and Daly City.

"These weren't just individuals seeking to exploit children. These were individuals seeking to sexually assault children," District Attorney Brooke Jenkins said.

San Francisco Sheriff Paul Miyamoto emphasized the risks associated with online interactions.

"One of the biggest lessons from operations like this is simple -- you never truly know who is behind a computer screen. That's true for children, parents, and law enforcement alike," Miyamoto said.

Miyamoto said two other people were arrested during the operation. The investigation remains active, and additional charges may be filed.
