Bay Area kicks off Pride Month as big celebrations planned

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) -- The Bay Area is launching Pride Month with powerful displays of visibility and a full calendar of events celebrating the LGBTQ+ community.

In Sonoma County, Pride festivities began Monday with the raising of the Pride flag over downtown Santa Rosa - a symbolic moment that organizers say sends a clear message of inclusion and presence.

"The highest point in Sonoma County - you can see the flag from the freeway, everywhere," said Christopher Kren-Mora, president of Sonoma County Pride. "A good statement to put out there, that we're here."

This year's theme, "Pride and True," reflects a focus on authenticity and belonging within the community.

"That's what my vision of Pride is," Kren-Mora added. "Being open and welcome in the community."

Sonoma County Pride is planning a full week of events leading up to its parade, scheduled for Saturday, June 6.

Meanwhile, preparations are underway in San Francisco for one of the city's most recognizable Pride traditions.

The iconic one-acre Pink Triangle will once again take shape on Twin Peaks this Saturday.

Volunteers are still being sought to help assemble the installation during an early setup Friday, ahead of a dedication ceremony.

San Francisco Pride celebrations will culminate in a packed weekend at the end of the month, featuring events across the city.

"We have community stages, a great show Sunday all day," said Suzanne Ford, executive director of SF Pride. "We have an API stage, a Latin stage, a Soul of Pride stage - lots of things Saturday and Sunday."

The annual Pride Parade remains a highlight.

"I'm always excited about the parade Sunday," Ford said. "Walking down Market, seeing all those people - it's the highlight of my year."

From North Bay flag raisings to large-scale celebrations in San Francisco, organizers say Pride Month across the Bay Area is about visibility, unity, and celebrating community.
