BENICIA, Calif. (KGO) -- A longtime Benicia fisherman is calling on local officials to address growing tensions among anglers at the Benicia Pier, saying disputes have increased as the spot's popularity rises and salmon numbers decline.

Cameron Smith, known locally as "Captain Cam," said he has been fishing in local waters for nearly 70 years and considers salmon fishing a way of life.

"Until you've actually caught a salmon, you can't understand it," Smith said.

Smith said fishing off the Benicia Pier can sometimes be tense. He attributed the atmosphere to the growing popularity of the fishing location and the dwindling number of salmon in the area.

"Most of the local fishermen here in Benicia are good people. They'll help you, they'll help kids. It's just a few bad apples that need to go away," Smith said.

According to Smith, arguments have occasionally broken out among people fishing from the pier. While he said none of the confrontations have become physical, he worries future incidents could escalate.

Smith said he has contacted city officials about his concerns but has not seen any action taken. Among the changes he would like to see are improved signage and regular law enforcement patrols in the area.

In a statement provided to ABC7 Eyewitness News, a Benicia city councilmember said: "Benicia's beautiful shores and the annual salmon run are big enough for everyone. However, there is no room for bullying and discrimination. If you see something unlawful and offensive, report it to Benicia PD."

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed to Eyewitness News that it has also received complaints about tensions at the Benicia Pier.

As local leaders acknowledge the issue, Smith said he hopes officials will take steps to address the concerns.

"Act. Act. Do something. Help us," he said.
