CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (KGO) -- An unoccupied car flew off a tow truck onto the BART tracks along I-580 in Castro Valley Tuesday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities say this was part of a three-vehicle crash just before 3 p.m. on I-580 westbound, near Eden Canyon Road.
The CHP says preliminary investigation shows the car was being towed by the tow truck at the time of the accident and flew off the bed of the truck and onto the BART tracks.
The tow truck driver sustained major injuries and was taken to the hospital, where CHP says his condition is unknown at this time.
The accident had a major impact on the evening commute. Several lanes had to be shut down on both sides of I-580 and finally reopened around 6 p.m. Tuesday.
BART service was initially stopped between Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton.
But BART said just after 6 p.m., service has been restored between Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton stations with major delays expected between the two stations as trains run on a single track.
Crews were able to safely remove the car from the tracks hours later by using a crane.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
