Dead & Company rocks night 2 at Golden Gate Park

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco's "Summer of Music" is going strong at Golden Gate Park.

Saturday night was an event that only San Francisco truly knows how to host. Dead & Company, which pays tribute to the Grateful Dead, headlined Night 2 of a three-day concert event.

They are celebrating 60 years of Grateful Dead music.

Under a blanket of San Francisco summer clouds, it was a sea of tie-dye as die-hard deadheads came to pay tribute to San Francisco legends.

"I am the mayor of the greatest city in the world. And it is my privilege to welcome Dead & Company," Mayor Daniel Lurie told the crowd of thousands as he welcomed the band on stage.

"Well, I was at the 50th. How can you miss the 60th?" said fan Mark Kelsey, who lives in Raleigh.

Dead & Company formed in 2015 with former Grateful Dead members. This weekend, they are celebrating 60 years of the band's music at a three day-event in Golden Gate Park.

When asked what makes this concert so special, Ty Decaires, who came from Brooklyn, New York, responded by saying, "You are looking at it! It is one of the grandest, longest running communities in American musical history...This is all about love and cultivating a safe vibe for people to just enjoy the music."

Each night, it's a different set list, so fans don't know what hits they'll hear.

"Every night you come, it's a different experience. John Mayer, Bob Weir, all of them are amazing. Jeff on the keyboards. They are some of the best musicians in the world, you know," said Jack Manalli, a Chicago resident

Dead & Company is also credited with popularizing Grateful Dead music with younger generations.

"I just think it's about the crowd they bring in. I mean, it brings out true peace in people," said Olivia Cunningham from Walnut Creek. "This is like the type of community you always strive for. And I think that is what everybody should dream of. That is who get at a concert like this."

"Actually, for a while I tried to fight it. But I can't. I'm three generations in. I really can't not be here. You know what I mean?" say Ashlynn Parenteau, a millennial Grateful Dead fan.

And for deadheads who saw the original band play, it's another night to celebrate the band's legacy.

"I started 1984, followed them ever since. And yeah, now I'm here for one last time," said a fan named Star, who came from Florida.
