Iconic 'Furthur' bus, symbol of 1960s hippie movement, makes return to SF for Grateful Dead exhibit

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The "Furthur" bus, one of the famous symbols of the hippie movement of the 1960s, has made its return to San Francisco.

The legendary vehicle rolled around the country and was used by Ken Kesey and his Merry Band of Pranksters.

It has sat for years on the Kesey farm in Oregon and looks a little worse for wear, but what makes the bus so special is what it symbolizes.

"If Furthur could talk today, it would say my journey is not done. In fact, the thing that we're really focused on is how this community gets together, shares history," said Kelly Harris, Haight Street Art Center executive director. "And the most important thing is the call to action. What are we doing today to bridge community through art and music and culture?"

The bus will be one of the fixtures of a Grateful Dead exhibit at Golden Gate Park.

"Forever Grateful Golden Gate Park" opens on Sept. 5.
