Jackknifed big rig blocks lanes on NB I-238 near San Leandro after driver falls asleep: CHP

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KGO) -- There is a major traffic alert for East Bay commuters Friday morning.

A jackknifed big rig with its axle ripped off is blocking lanes on the connector between Interstates 238 and 880, and the backup stretches for more than two miles.

It is right near the San Leandro, San Lorenzo border.

The California Highway Patrol says that the driver fell asleep and the truck crashed into a sand barrel, which exploded and sand went into lanes. The axle is also ripped out from under the truck.

CHP confirms that there were no injuries in the crash and that the driver was coming from the Central Valley, carrying around 40,000 pounds of fruit.

CHP officials are on scene and say lane closures will be in place for some time Friday morning.

"We will need some room to work because we need to lift that truck, there is a lot of stuff inside of it. It will be an inconvenience for a bit," a CHP official told ABC7 Eyewitness News.
