SAN BRUNO, Calif. (KGO) -- One man is dead after a shooting and a fire burned a home to the ground in San Bruno Friday afternoon.

We're told by police the incident started as a shooting investigation at around 3 p.m., on Keefe Court near Rosewood Drive.

The shooting victim was taken to the hospital but later died.

As for the shooter - that's a bit of a mystery.

Police have not indicated whether there was an arrest or if the suspect was inside the home when it went up in flames.

Some people had to be evacuated, but they are back in their homes Friday night.

"Once the fire department is done addressing the fire threat, we'll be able to go into the house and get a better sense and start our criminal investigation," said San Bruno Police Dept. Chief Matt Lethin, "San Bruno is a safe community, this is a rare type of occurrence here, and I understand from the community it can be particularly alarming."

San Bruno police told us they had no priors calls for problems at the home.
