At least 2 in custody after SWAT activity on eastbound I-580 in San Leandro causes massive backup

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KGO) -- A freeway standoff involving SWAT teams and multiple damaged vehicles caused major traffic delays on Interstate 580 in San Leandro before authorities took a driver into custody.

The incident shut down westbound Interstate 580 near the Benedict Drive off-ramp, where SKY7 captured aerial footage of the standoff.

According to Alameda County authorities, the incident began when officers attempted to stop a driver for a traffic violation. Authorities said the driver fled and was later spotted driving the wrong way on the freeway.

Investigators said the driver struck another vehicle before the car stalled. Several law enforcement vehicles then surrounded the disabled car while the driver remained inside, leading to a lengthy standoff in the middle of Interstate 580.

Officers eventually moved in and threw what appeared to be tear gas canisters at the vehicle. Authorities said the driver later opened the door, allowing officers to take him into custody.

The standoff lasted about an hour and caused a significant traffic backup. The California Highway Patrol shut down Interstate 580 in both directions as officers attempted to negotiate with the driver.

The suspect and a passenger who was also taken into custody were transported to a hospital for treatment. The driver of the vehicle that was struck was also taken to a hospital.

Investigators said no one suffered serious injuries. Traffic has since resumed, though investigators remained at the scene.
