Case closed! Marmots that mysteriously appeared in Bay Area released back into wild

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A marmot mystery we've been following for weeks has finally been solved.

Two of the creatures hitchhiked their way to the Bay Area from unknown mountains, and this morning, the case is closed.

This week, a wildlife rescue released the marmots near Lake Tahoe, which they think is close enough to where the animals came from.

The stowaways turned up in San Francisco and Antioch earlier this month within days of each other.

The wildlife rescue thinks they probably caught a ride in cars returning from Burning Man.

Marmots are notorious for climbing in car undercarriages and can pass out after drinking radiator fluid.
