LIVE: Massive Steller sea lion appears on Pier 39 docks in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Once again, a Steller sea lion has appeared on the iconic Pier 39 docks Wednesday morning.

The massive animal was confirmed by Pier 39 to be a Steller sea lion, a species that is significantly bigger than the California sea lions more commonly seen at the popular waterfront attraction.

Earlier in September, another Steller sea lion was seen on the docks.

These sightings have evoked the internet-famous Chonkers, who made Pier 39 his home for several days back in April and took social media by storm.

Steller sea lions are rare, majestic visitors to the bay.

If you are trying to spot the difference between them from the standard sea lion, look for these traits:

• Massive size: Steller sea lions can reach up to 11 feet in length and weigh as much as 2,500 pounds.


• Bear head vs. dog head: Steller sea lions have distinct, bear-shaped heads, whereas California sea lions sport narrower, dog-shaped heads.
