MENDOCINO, Calif. (KGO) -- Christmas came early for a Mendocino fisherman who likely reeled in a state, and maybe world, record catch.
On Tuesday, Brendan Walsh landed a 10.25-pound canary rock fish near the Albion River Harbor in Mendocino County.

For reference, the average weight of a canary rock fish is around 2 to 5 pounds.
According to Walsh, the weather was beginning to change and he made one last cast before heading back in.
"Normally those fish don't get that big," he said. "So normally I let them go. They're actually a fairly rare fish and they're usually a little smaller than that, not even eating size. So it was pretty shocking."
Walsh filled out forms to verify his fish for both a state and world record catch.
He is now waiting for validation.
