8 injured in SF after truck crashes into car during police chase, leaving trail of wreckage: SFFD

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Eight people are injured after a car crash during a police pursuit Sunday evening, authorities say.

The incident happened just after 8 p.m. in the area of South Van Ness Avenue and 14th Street while police were pursuing a pickup truck that then crashed into another vehicle.

San Francisco Police Department said officers first observed the truck driving "erratically" at Guerrero and 19th streets. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect vehicle "failed to yield and continued driving with a willful and wanton disregard for the safety of the public."

The truck carrying five young people eventually came to a stop in the area of 14th and South Van Ness Avenue when it crashed into another car carrying four people, which collided into a fire hydrant and an Audi car dealership.

Officers quickly detained the driver and the other four occupants of the suspect vehicle for the investigation.

San Francisco Fire Department confirmed that eight people were injured between the two vehicles that collided. SFFD says the ninth person was assed but declined treatement.

Two people are in critical condition and six people were described with minor to moderate injuries.

SFPD said another patrol car was also almost hit during the pursuit.

The burst fire hydrant was reinstalled Monday morning in front of the boarded up window at an Audi car dealership.

The owner of a parked car that was also smashed, came outside to see his car heavily damaged.

"I woke up, and then I saw there was messages from some friends, and they were talking about some crazy car chase, car wreck at 14th and South Van Ness, and so I thought about it, and before I was going back to sleep, and I was like, 'Oh, my car's parked over there.," the man said.

The identity of the suspects is not being released at this time, and their charges are still pending, according to police.
