It's spooky season, and Hulu is debuting a new series that blends dark comedy with mystery and the frightening life stage lovingly called "coming of age."
"Phony" features a star-studded cast and an Academy Award-nominated creator.
Alicia Vitarelli spoke with the cast and crew about this funny yet nail-biting new series.
Sonny Cook considered himself lucky, until he gets into a car accident and realizes his life may have changed in more ways than one.
When he wakes up, he is convinced his mother has been replaced by an imposter.
Connie Britton plays Ellen, the once-loving mother, who is now a mind-bending mystery.
"This feels like something that you haven't quite seen before," says Britton. "For me, that's so exciting."
"You have no idea what's going to happen," says Sim Nivola, who plays Sonny. "Wouldn't you like to know what's going to happen in this cliffhanger of an exciting show?"
The burning questions: Is that his mother? Is this other woman a PHONY?
"It's sort of like, whoa! What is happening? What does this mean?" says Britton. "The mystery of that is something that I've never been able to play before."
The creators say at the heart, this is a coming-of-age story.
"That time of your life is so hard, but we all go through it," says Anthony King, the co-showrunner and executive producer.
"You're kind of in this frenzied state of wanting to feel big things and be connected, but also feeling so strange and so alienated," says Nick Paley, the co-showrunner and executive producer who also worked on the Oscar-nominated animated film "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On."
Sonny turns to his friends with his suspicions, which is where mystery meets drama, meets humor.
"It's a surprisingly funny watch," says Grace Brennan, who plays Sonny's friend Mallory.
As oddities and inconsistencies are revealed, the audience gets to piece together this puzzle, right alongside Sonny and his crew.
"I was shocked when I read the script," says Mahaela Park, who plays Sonny's girlfriend Chloe.
The first two episodes of "Phony" are now streaming on Hulu.
The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC station.
