New details on George Lucas' passion project, the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

"This project is so vast in scale!"

That's the word from Ryan Linkof, Senior Curator and Head of Film Programs at the Lucas Museum.

On The Red Carpet caught up with Linkof at San Diego Comic-Con, where he was part of a Hall H panel, giving the audience new details on the museum.

"There's 100,000 square feet of exhibition space. There are 33 galleries. There's an outdoor park. There's film programs," he explained. "There are 1,300 artworks in the exhibition."

The museum, founded by "Star Wars" creator George Lucas and his wife Mellody Hobson, features work from the couple's own collections.

"George has been a collector for 50 years. He's an artist himself. Mellody is also a visionary thinker. They are two people who had a big idea and have made it reality," said Linkof.

The inaugural Film Program will showcase cinema as a vehicle for telling stories and advanced technology for creating a moving visual experience.

One theater is named in honor of trailblazing documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty and will feature film screenings documenting the process of artistic production.

The other theater is named after Slavko Vorkapich, special effects artist who created dazzling montage sequences. Films screening in this theater will showcase "the emotion of motion."

Linkof said it made perfect sense to the team to come to Comic-Con to reveal the Lucas Museum plans.

"I think there's a way in which this audience really implicitly understands the project. There's enthusiasm and excitement for it and because... Comics, film, all the adjacent forms of art will be present in the museum, it's just a natural place for us to be," Linkof said.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will be open to the public September 22.
