Possibly distracted lifeguard ran over woman on Half Moon Bay beach

HALF MOON BAY, Calif. (KGO) -- Authorities say a lifeguard may have been distracted when their truck ran over a 20-year-old woman at a Peninsula beach Wednesday afternoon.

According to State Parks officials, the incident happened at Francis Beach in Half Moon Bay, where the woman was lying on the sand when she was struck by a lifeguard driving a pickup truck.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Office said the woman was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Investigators said the person driving the truck may have been distracted.

ABC7 Eyewitness News saw the tire treads still in the sand Thursday morning.

Witnesses describe seeing emergency personnel helping the woman.

"Me and my cousins, we saw cops running over to the beach," said Elena Inzunza of Auburn, who was camping with her family. "So we went to check it out, and a girl was buried under the sand."

"That's really sad," said Tania Jess of Half Moon Bay. "I mean, I've never heard of that before, so that's really sad for both. So I hope that person in the sand is okay."

The incident remains under investigation.
