Crews suspend search for swimmer missing at SF's Aquatic Park

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- We are learning new details about the missing swimmer who was expected to return to San Francisco's Aquatic Park area on Saturday morning.

San Francisco's swimming community is holding on to hope, as the hours and days go by without any sight of 35-year-old Nikolas Tomasevic.

"Very strong swimmer and dedicated swimming. He would swim year-round, winter and summer," said swimmer George Robyn.

Nikolas was last seen on Saturday around 10:15 a.m. swimming inside the Aquatic Park Cove. He was wearing an orange swimming cap and swimming trunks. George Robyn knew Nikolas and is concerned he might have had a medical episode.

"A seizure- that if he had a seizure in the water that would be it. He said that, kind of in passing to someone else in the past," said Robyn.

Multiple city agencies began searching for Nikolas Saturday afternoon after the swimmer he was with reported him missing.

"Unfortunately, that person waited four hours to let us know. That is the gap in time that doesn't really allow us to get a pinpoint location," said Lt. Mariano Elias with SFFD. "We worked with the police department, the coast guard and highway patrol to try to look using sonar and basically try to see where that person was, we had no luck finding them."

Swimmers in the water on Monday wondered what happened.

"You never know what can happen out there," said swimmer Hayley Ricci. "I just don't like the feeling of knowing that he is out there and I feel bad that he hasn't been recovered yet. It's unfortunate."

The Dolphin Swimming and Boating Club where Nikolas was a member placed the flags at half-staff to honor him.

"This is a tight community, and Nikolas was part of it as are his friends. It's a sad day here," said Ken Coren, Vice President of Dolphin Swimming and Boating Club.
