Increased security at SJSU after racist graffiti found in bathroom

SAN JOSE, Calf. (KGO) -- Inside a San Jose State University bathroom, newly-discovered graffiti suggested there would be a mass shooting on campus targeting Chinese, Muslim and Jewish students.

While the threat is not deemed credible, the threat during the final weeks of the fall semester at San Jose State canceled some classes and spread concern among the student body and school staff.

The hateful message and swastikas were etched into a Macquarrie Hall bathroom stall - specifically warning white students to avoid campus on November 19, 20 and 21 due to a planned shooting.

"I was worried and I was hesitating, I didn't know if I wanted to come or not," Freshman Pedro Rodriguez said. "We can't take threats like that lightly because it's happened in the past."

The University Police Department says foot patrols have been increased on campus. The FBI has been contacted per university policy and temporary security cameras have been installed in and around Macquarrie.

While the threat is not deemed credible at this time, Captain Jermaine Thomas says student safety remains a priority.

"We've got to take each one of these instances serious until we figure out if it's gonna be credible or not," Thomas said. "And at this point right now, in regards to this, we're looking at it as low level just because the fact this is all we have, just something that was written on the wall."

"This school has such a diverse range students of backgrounds like and religious backgrounds, so it's very sad to see that here on this campus," Graduate student An Truong said.

The campus remained open as a whole despite certain professors in Macquarrie Hall opting to go virtual or cancel classes all together.

As the enhanced security continues, school officials are asking for the public's assistance to help with the investigation.
