SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Some drivers swear that you can get more bang for your buck by buying gas at a particular time of day. High summer temps and record-breaking gas costs may have added fuel to a myth that it's better to fill up your car in the cooler morning hours. But Consumer Reports just released a new study that proves... there's barely any difference.
The urban legend says that when it's hot out, gasoline expands in volume... meaning you get less energy out of a gallon.
Consumer Reports put this to the test. They measured the temperature in underground gas tanks and the volume of gas pumped into the car tank, dispensing gas at 8:30 a.m. and from 12:30 to 1 p.m.
The results? Even with a 15-degree difference in temperature outside, there was only a one percent difference in volume, and only for the first few gallons from the pump. The difference in cost... only a few cents.
If you're looking to save money on gas, Consumer Reports offered these tips instead.
All great ways to save, no matter what time it is.
