MUNDELEIN, Ill. -- Five people were found dead from gunshot wounds inside a home in Mundelein, Illinois, according to police.
Police responded to the home on Wellington Avenue in the Chicago suburbs for a well-being check at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday.
When officers entered the home, they found five people -- three men and two women -- dead from gunshot wounds.
Police said they appeared to be family members or have a domestic relationship.
Two handguns were recovered from the scene and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
Investigators were seen going in and out of the house and examining multiple cars in the driveway, including police forcing their way into a gray Volkswagen in the parking lot next door to the house.
It's unclear what they found in the car or how that relates to the case.
Neighbors told our sister station WLS that the couple who lived in the home were retired veterinarians, and the wife -- who was beloved by those who knew her -- was someone who would take regular walks in the neighborhood.
"She was a spry, retired veterinarian," a neighbor said. "She was a friendly person. She'd wave to people. She'd have conversations with all kinds of neighbors...I'm horrified. I'm horrified that this would happen to somebody and somebody that I knew."
Police said it appears to be an isolated incident.
