WILLITS, Calif. (KGO) -- Some injuries have been reported after a magnitude 5.6 earthquake struck Northern California on Wednesday, knocking out power and water service for thousands and causing widespread but seemingly minor damage.

The quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6, was later downgraded to a 5.6. It was centered near Willits, north of Ukiah, in a relatively unpopulated area. At least a dozen aftershocks have been recorded, most under 2.5 magnitude.

The Mendocino County Executive Office says that there have been some injuries, but no deaths.

The shaking was felt across parts of the Bay Area, with reports from Sonoma, Walnut Creek and as far south as San Jose.

Photos from a Willits resident show plates and cans knocked to the ground, while a heavy speaker was seen shifting nearly off a ledge.

Several grocery stores were shut down, and power was out across the community, according to the PG&E outage map.

Video received by ABC7 Eyewitness News shows the moment the earthquake hit inside a Lake County grocery store, with strong shaking causing items to fall inside.

More video from stores in Willits show the mess with dozens of items off of shelves.

Greenwood Ridge Fire Chief R.D. Beacon described the quake as a warning for residents.

Governor Gavin Newsom's office says the governor has been briefed on the quake and they are coordinating with emergency officials to assess impacts and damage.

State Sen. Mike McGuire said in a post on X that damage assessments were ongoing, with no early reports of major public infrastructure damage in Ukiah or Willits, including hospitals and sewer systems. However, outages affecting water and power were being reported.

Officials were continuing to gather information as crews assessed the extent of damage across the region.
