17-year-old arrested in deadly Morgan Hill mass shooting at large birthday party

MORGAN Hill, Calif. -- A 17-year-old suspect was arrested Thursday in connection with a fatal shooting last month at a large birthday party near Morgan Hill.

A teenager died and six others were injured on July 25 during a pop-up party promoted on social media that was attended by about 300 people in Coyote Valley, northwest of Morgan Hill, authorities said.

Just before the shooting, Santa Clara County Sheriff's deputies responded at about 10:15 p.m. to reports of intoxicated people in the street and a person throwing bottles at cars.

Family members are mourning the loss of Desi Romero, a teen who was fatally shot at a party in unincorporated Morgan Hill on Saturday night.

When they arrived, deputies encountered chaos and partygoers running from just-fired gunshots, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Deputies provided medical assistance to the victims until paramedics arrived and declared one person dead.

On Thursday, the Sheriff's Office and tactical teams served a high-risk search warrant at a home in Salinas, where the suspect was taken into custody.

Several tips, videos, and photos provided detectives with evidence that helped identify the suspected shooter, which led to the subsequent arrest, the sheriff's office said.

"We're deeply grateful to the community members who stepped forward and shared what they knew," said Sheriff Robert Jonsen.

The suspect, whose name was not released, will face charges Monday at a detention hearing at the Santa Clara County Juvenile Justice Courthouse in San Jose.
