BAY POINT, Calif. (KGO) -- A Bay Point woman received a new heating and air conditioning system as an October heat wave settles into the Bay Area. Brenda Quinonez watched as crews installed the new HVAC system at her home.

Quinonez said she has been unable to afford repairs to her heating and cooling system since her husband died in 2011.

"It's something that was needed and I haven't been able to afford things. My husband's gone and I'm just the only one here, so it's just been hard the last few years," Quinonez said.

With temperatures soaring well above average and a Heat Advisory in effect for much of the region through Thursday, San Franciscans are taking advantage of what many call the city's true summer season: October.

A technician with Perfect Star Heating, Cooling, & Electrical discovered Quinonez's air conditioner was not cooling properly and nominated her to receive a free furnace and air conditioner.

HVAC manufacturer Lennox supplied the equipment, and Perfect Star Heating, Cooling, & Electrical provided the installation.

"The coolest it would get would be like 85 to 95 degrees, just based on the old system," said Hank Romero, manager of Perfect Star Heating, Cooling, & Electrical. "You know, at least she has the shading of the rooftop, but now it's going to be at her convenience because it's going to have to be a nice thermostat that you can program literally."

The new system was provided through the Feel the Love program, which offers free heating and cooling systems to homeowners in need.

The program accepts applications through its website.

For Quinonez, the installation comes at a critical time as temperatures rise during the October heat wave.

"This was such a blessing. This was just a blessing, the timing and everything," she said.
