OAKLAND, Calif. -- A San Joaquin County man was charged in connection with a deadly March shooting inside a crowded Oakland nightclub that killed two people and wounded at least five others, according to federal prosecutors.
Jarvis Toussaint, 40, of Mountain House, was charged with being a felon in possession of ammunition and made his initial appearance Wednesday in federal court in Oakland, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California said in a statement Thursday.
According to a criminal complaint unsealed this week, Toussaint allegedly engaged in a shootout at a downtown Oakland nightclub in the early morning hours of March 7.
Two people were killed, including an Oakland woman, while they were trying to flee the gunfire. At least five other people suffered gunshot wounds, authorities said.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Toussaint fled the nightclub after the shooting but was later identified using surveillance video, automated license plate reader technology, car dealership records, Instagram evidence, cellphone location data and DNA analysis.
Authorities said the semiautomatic pistol allegedly used by Toussaint has not been recovered, though investigators found spent shell casings at the scene.
Toussaint had multiple prior felony convictions and was prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition at the time of the shooting, prosecutors said.
Toussaint, who was already in federal custody on an unrelated matter, is scheduled to return to court on Tuesday. Federal prosecutors said the charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if he is convicted.
