Toddler killed in San Jose pedestrian crash

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Police in San Jose are investigating a deadly collision Wednesday afternoon that neighbors said claimed the life of a child.

Police were called to the area along Canoas Garden Avenue before 4:30 p.m. about reports of a 1-year-old that had been struck by a vehicle. The child was taken to the hospital, where they later died.

The collision happened in a residential area with nearby condominiums and apartment buildings.

Officers remained at the scene for several hours as the investigation continued.

There was a heavy police presence in the area until about 9:30 p.m., when a car that may have been involved in the incident was towed away.

San Jose police spent hours working to determine exactly what led up to the collision.

Two neighbors said they did not witness the incident itself but came outside after realizing something had happened. One neighbor said she saw the child's mother shortly after the collision.

"She was hysterical, she had her hands over her eyes," that neighbor said. "And I think the baby left in the ambulance without her because we saw the mother get into a police vehicle...And I just said we're praying for you and she said thank you."

Neighbors said they have feared for years that a serious crash could happen at that location.

The incident marks the 16th traffic-related death in San Jose since the start of 2026.

The San Jose Police Department said the investigation is ongoing.
