DURHAM, N.C. -- Fourteen years after UNC student Faith Hedgepeth was found murdered in her apartment in Chapel Hill and 5 years after he was charged with the crime, Miguel Salguero-Olivares is on trial.

Opening statements began after more than a week of seating 12 jurors and selecting four alternates. The fourth and final alternate juror was selected Wednesday, Oct. 7.

Faith Hedgepeth's roommate and another friend found her partially nude and beaten to death in her bedroom on Sept. 7, 2012.

The case went unsolved until Sept. 16, 2021, when Chapel Hill police announced the arrest of Salguero-Olivares.

According to court documents, Miguel Enrique Salguero-Olivares was on investigators' radar for Hedgepeth's murder.

Authorities used DNA ancestry technology to find Hedgepeth's killer using DNA found in her rape kit, a wine bottle and a white takeout bag, with a vulgar message written by the killer.

The technique identified the suspect's distant family members, who shared his genetic information, according to the report. Those relatives gave interviews and their DNA, which investigators say helped identify Salguero-Olivares.

Family members and friends of Faith Hedgepeth endured another emotional day in court Wednesday as jurors viewed graphic video and heard testimony detailing the crime scene where the 19-year-old UNC Chapel Hill student was found dead in 2012.

The final witness of the day was Chapel Hill Police Department forensic evidence technician Tamika Price, who walked jurors through video recorded by an investigator at the crime scene.

The video showed the apartment bedroom where Hedgepeth's body was discovered. Jurors were shown blood spatter on the walls, blood-stained bedding and Hedgepeth lying motionless on the bed.

There were visible reactions from many of Faith's loved ones as the video was played. Some shifted uncomfortably in their seats, while one friend wiped away tears.

At times, the accused killer Miguel Salguero-Olivares covered his face and looked away from the screen.

Jury shown graphic crime scene footage in Faith Hedgepeth murder trial

The ninth witness to testify in the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial was Tamika Price, a forensic evidence technician with the Chapel Hill Police Department.

During Price's testimony, jurors were shown graphic crime scene video recorded by investigators inside Hedgepeth's apartment.

The video showed Hedgepeth's white Nissan Altima parked outside the apartment complex before moving inside the residence. Jurors then saw blood spattered on the wall above Hedgepeth's pillow, blood-covered pillows on the bed, a bloody tampon on the floor and Hedgepeth lying unresponsive in her bed.

The video also showed boxer shorts that investigators found inside Hedgepeth's bedroom.

As the footage played, members of Hedgepeth's family appeared visibly uncomfortable in their seats.

Price testified that she photographed the crime scene after arriving at the apartment.

Jurors were also shown photographs taken by Price, including images of vomit in a bathroom trash can. Price described it as a red slushy-like substance.

First officer to find Faith Hedgepeth's body takes the stand

The eighth witness to testify in the Faith Hedgepeth murder trial was Michael Castro, a Chapel Hill police officer with 22 years of experience.

Castro told jurors he was the first officer to enter the apartment and find Hedgepeth's body. At the time, he was assigned to the department's traffic unit and also served as a school resource officer.

On Sept. 7, 2012, Castro responded to a call at Hawthorne Apartments. Although the complex is located in Durham County, it falls within Chapel Hill's jurisdiction, which is why the Chapel Hill Police Department responded.

Castro said the 911 call came in around 11 a.m. regarding an unresponsive woman.

After arriving at the apartment, Castro testified that he touched a door handle as he entered. He described the apartment as messy. Castro said Hedgepeth was wearing a black shirt and that a comforter covered the lower half of her body.
