Police said a white Tesla careened off a roadway and struck the woman

SIMI VALLEY, Calif. -- A 79-year-old woman was killed after being struck by a Tesla that ended up crashing into the outdoor seating area of a shopping center restaurant in Simi Valley, California on Monday afternoon, authorities said.
The crash was reported at about 2:30 p.m. outside an Urbane Cafe, in the parking lot of a shopping center that includes a Target store.
Police said a white Tesla careened off a roadway and struck the woman as she was walking on a sidewalk outside the restaurant. The vehicle crashed into the building, leaving mangled chairs, tables and shattered glass scattered across the sidewalk.

Investigators said the Tesla jumped a curb, hitting the victim and narrowly missing two customers who had gotten up to leave moments before the collision.
When first responders arrived, the elderly victim was found trapped underneath the vehicle.
"We're still trying to determine if speed was involved. We do know that the Tesla was going northbound through the parking lot. It was attempting to make a right-hand turn to go eastbound toward Madera and, unfortunately, did not make the turn and went over the sidewalk when it struck the female victim," Simi Valley police Sgt. Rick Morton said.
The Tesla driver, a 64-year-old woman, had four juvenile passengers in the vehicle, police said. The driver complained of a wrist injury, and she and one of the juveniles were taken to a hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The other three juveniles were taken home by family members.
Witnesses and shoppers looked on as first responders arrived at the scene.

"I don't know the whole story, but this poor lady just lost her life having lunch on a Monday afternoon," Simi Valley resident Dana Aghassi said.
A bouquet of flowers was left outside the restaurant following the fatal crash.
Police said the crash does not appear to have been intentional, but investigators are still working to determine the cause.
"We don't believe it was an intentional act but until we can determine what the cause was, whether it was mechanical failure or there was impairment by the driver, it's still to be determined," Morton said.
The victim was a resident of Agoura Hills, California, but her name has not been released.
